WIldcats split Sunday series, take three from GNAC leading Wolves

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Ellensburg, WA -- The Central Washington University baseball team earned a Sunday series split and a weekend series win versus Western Oregon University, falling in game one 12-7 and winning game two 6-4.

The three-win weekend leaves the Wildcats 18-13 overall and 11-9 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, while the Wolves stumble to 20-14 and 13-7 in the GNAC.

Game two starter, senior Willie Davies (Shoreline, WA, Shorecrest), earned his second win of the season as he went five strong innings, allowing six hits, one earned run, and striking out two.

The senior benefited from two double plays during the game.

Senior Kasey Bielec (Port Orchard, WA, North Mason) got the Wildcats on the board in the bottom of the third with a bases-loaded walk that pushed junior Jeff Beckman (Renton, WA, Hazen) across the dish. Bielec finished the day 4-for-6 with four RBI.

After a three-run sixth for the Wolves, Bielec and Beckman teamed up again to score a key insurance run in the bottom half of the inning. A two-hop line drive, off the bat of Bielec, found some grass in right field that allowed Beckman score from second.

Junior Cory Welch (Las Vegas, NV, Bishop Gorman) came on to relieve Davies in the sixth and worked his way around two Wildcat errors to finish the inning, and pitched a quick seventh inning to earn his seventh save of the season.

The Wildcats battled early in game one and brought the contest within one run when senior KASEY BIELEC touched them all on a well struck, 0-1, pitch that carried over the fence in right in the fourth inning. But a six run ninth inning by the Wolves proved to me to much.

Senior Ethan Sterkel (Ellensburg, WA, Ellensburg) finished 4-for-4 with three RBIs in the game two loss.

Starting pitcher, senior Kurtis Pitcher (Seabeck, WA, Klahowya), threw five innings allowing three unearned runs, five hits and striking out eight.

The Wildcats will travel to Nampa, Idaho to play a four-game set versus Northwest Nazarene with doubleheaders beginning at 3 p.m. (PDT) on Saturday and Noon (PDT) on Sunday.
