Box Score The Central Washington University baseball team got strong pitching from senior pitcher
Stuart Fewel (Portland, OR, Wilson) and clutch hitting by
Scott Stone (Corvallis, OR, Crescent Valley) as the Wildcats swept Saint Martin's University (5-1, 4-3) Sunday afternoon at the CWU Baseball Fields.
Fewel needed only 86 pitches to earn his third win of the season in game one as Central Washington University won the series 3-1.
The Wildcats improve their record to 15-12 overall and 8-8 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference. The losses leaves Saints 8-20 overall and 5-11 in GNAC.
Fewel, the efficient senior scattered four hits over nine strong innings striking out two and walking none.
Three early runs in the bottom of the third proved to be the deciding factor, capped by a two-out two RBI double by senior
Kasey Bielec (Port Orchard, WA, North Mason) that split the left and center fielder as
Eric Tinnell (Ephrata, WA, Ephrata) and
Kyle Baumgartner (Enumclaw, WA, Enumclaw) found the plate.
Senior
Josh Potter (Des Moines, WA, Mount Rainier) added two hits and an insurance RBI in the 8th on a seeing-eye single through the right side that plated Bielec.
Fewel, shut the door in the 9th going three up, three down and was aided by his second double play of the game in the final inning.
Game two featured multiple homeruns which included a two-run opposite field homerun by Stone that broke the 0-0 tie in the second inning.
Saint Martin's answered in the third inning with a two-out RBI single to center off reliever
Cory Welch (Las Vegas, NV, Bishop Gorman)h to tie the game.
Starting pitcher
Willie Davies (Shoreline, WA, Shorecrest) went 4.2 innings allowing eight hits with three earned runs.
In the bottom of the fifth, Welch put the Wildcats back on top with a homerun to center and closed the game with 2.1 scoreless innings with two strikeouts.
Central will look to continue their success next weekend as they host GNAC conference leader Western Oregon Saturday and Sunday with games on both days beginning at noon.
