Tollefson was a NAIA All-American in both cross country and track and field, finishing as high as third in the 5,000 meters (track) while earning a ninth-place finish at nationals; the highest ever by a Wildcat. He qualified for NAIA nationals six times in his career, ranks third in school history in both the 10,000 meters and the steeplechase, and is fifth all-time in the 5,000. Tollefson won a total of four District 1 championships and later developed into one of the top long distance runners in the United States, placing 13th in the 10,000 meters at the 2000 Olympic Trials.
