Kelly was a standout for the Wildcats' cross country and track and field teams during his career from 1968-71. He earned NAIA All-American Honors m both sports, including a third-place national finish m the steeplechase in 1969. Kelly's career-best time of 9:00.8 in the steeplechase remains the second-best mark in CWU history. In cross country, Kelly helped Central Washington to a sixth-place team finish at the 1970 NAIA National Championships, a meet in which he placed 23rd individually to earn All-American honors.
