Torrence was the first male student-athlete from CWU to ever win a national individual title in track and field after being crowned the 1987 NAIA national champion in the hammer throw. A two-time district champion in the discus, Torrence also placed sixth nationally in the event in 1986. Voted team captain in 1987, Torrence's leadership and excellence extended beyond the track as CWU's first Academic All-American.
