Schippers was a two-time National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) AH-American in the 1,500 meters, finishing second in both the 1982 and 1983 national championship meets. In 1983, as a junior, he actually posted the fastest 1,500-meter time in the nation at the NAIA level the son of Dutch immigrants, Schippers went to the 1984 Olympic Trials in the event for The Netherlands. His time of 3:45 is still among the fastest 1,500 meters in Central history. Schippers also represented the Wildcats at the 1982 NAIA cross country national meet, where he placed seventieth out of 321 participants. After starting his track career in junior high school, Schippers ran a school record mile time of 4:23 for Woodway High School in Edmonds in 1979. He graduated from Central in 1984 with a bachelor's degree in construction management.
