Coached by Tom Parry, the 1984 squad became the first Wildcat football team to qualify for the postseason with its appearance in the NAIA Division I playoffs. The team finished the regular season with a 10-1 record, its only loss was in the season opener at Division I Eastern Washington. The Wildcats, who had a total of six players named to NAIA All-American teams that year, including first team linebacker Maurice Hanks, won the school’s first-ever playoff game at East Central (Okla.) before falling in the national semifinals to eventual co-champion Central Arkansas.
