Harshman was a standout on both the CWU cross-country and track and field teams between 1979-84. At the time of his induction, he still held CWU’s 3,000- and 10,000- meter records, ranked second all time in the 5,000 meters, and 10th in the 1,500 meters. He placed third in the 10,000 to earn All-American honors at the 1984 National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) national meet. In addition, Harshman took seventh in the 5,000 in 1984 and 11th in the 10,000 at the 1982 national meet. He also led the Wildcats to four consecutive top-10 finishes at the NAIA national cross-country meet. Following his college career, Harshman continued running competitively. He won more than 30 road and track races throughout North America and finished second in the 1992 Seattle Marathon. At the time of his induction, Harshman had served as a music educator for 27 years and his jazz ensembles were regarded as among the finest in the nation.
