The 1988-89 team tied a school record with thirty-two victories. The Wildcats defeated Western Washington University to win the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) District I championship and advance to the NAIA Division I
National Tournament. Central won three games in the tourney before falling to Saint Mary's (Texas) in the national semifinals. Carl Aaron was the team's leading scorer, averaging 20 points per game. Dave Biwer grabbed 8.5 boards per contest to lead the team in rebounding. Jim Toole led the squad by averaging 3.2 assists per game. And Van Beard's 113 blocked shots set the all-time school single-season record. The team was coached by Dean Nicholson, who was inducted into the Athletic Hall of
Fame with the inaugural class in 1983.
