Ring was an All-American in the men’s steeplechase during the 1968 season. His time of 9:54.0 placed third at the NAIA national championships that year. In addition, he won district championships in the six-mile run in both 1967 and 1968, adding an Evergreen Conference title in the men’s three-mile run in 1968. Ring’s career-best times in the 3,000 and 10,000 meters still rank among the top times in school history. Following his career as a student-athlete at CWU, he embarked on a very successful coaching career, leading the University of Puget Sound women’s cross country team to four-straight NAIA national titles (1992-95) and earning National Coach of the Year honors in 1993.
