1963 team finished the year with a 9-0 record - the first undefeated football team in school history. The Wildcats steamrolled through Evergreen Conference play, posting a 7-0 league record under first-year head coach Mel Thompson and ended the season ranked 10th in the nation. The Wildcats defense was known as “Big Red” and stifled its opponents, posting four shutouts and allowing just 4.8 points per game. All 11 members of the starting defense were named to the All-Evergreen Conference teams, with Phill Fitterer and Art Ellis being named to both the offensive and defensive teams.
