Beckwith lettered three times in track and field at Central Washington from 1961-63, setting a career-best with a mark of 6'5" in the high jump. He then went on to a legendary career as track and field coach at Garfield High School in Seattle, where he retired in 2001 after 29 years as the Bulldogs' head coach. Beckwith coached Garfield to 18 league championships and six state titles during his tenure, with 22 Individuals finishing as state champions.
