Despite the fact that he was considered an underdog going into the title match both years, Shaw won the 142-pound weight classification in 1973, as a sophomore, and 1974, as a junior, at the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Wrestling Championships. The second year, he won the title in a referee's decision in overtime, in a match that drew a standing ovation from the crowd. Participating coaches voted Shaw the award for the 1974 tournaments outstanding wrestler, while he helped lead the Wildcats to the national team Wrestling title. Despite battling what was thought to be a career ending knee injury, Shaw made it back to nationals in 1977, where he wrestled at 158 pounds, making it to the quarterfinals. At Sunnyside High School, Shaw was also a state and national wrestling champion, and was a member of Washington's first cultural exchange wrestling team that visited Japan in 1970.
