Pat graduated from Marysville High School in 1938 where he lettered in football, basketball, and track. Martin was described as an outstanding receiver and “a fierce defensive player” on the gridiron, and was track’s top hurdler. Martin entered the field of education following a stint with the Coast Guard during World War II. He coached football, basketball and track at Randle High School before moving to Ellensburg in 1950. Martin taught at Morgan Middle School until 1965 when he was named head basketball and cross country coach at Ellensburg High School. He compiled a 178-89 record in 12 basketball seasons at EHS. The Bulldogs won four league titles, and a state championship in 1972.
