The 1986 swim team won the NAIA National Championship after posting a 9-1 dual meet record during the regular season en route to a regional title. At the National Championship meet, nine different swimmers combined to earn a total of 37 AII-American awards, including 17 individual honors and the maximum of 20 in five relay events. At the National Championships in Spokane, Wash., the Wildcats defeated Pacific Lutheran by a score of 378.5 to 331 to capture its first and only national championship. Debbie Gray won individual titles in both the 100 and 200 breaststrokes, while Sharon Wilson captured the 200 and 400 individual medley crowns. Central Washington also took home the 400 freestyle relay title, with Michelle Flury, Amy carroll, Cyndi Hudon and Tani Thorstenson teaming up for a time of 3:36.70
