Led by head coach Bob Gregson and CWU Athletic Hall of Fame swimmers John Sayre and Jeff Walker, the Wildcats won the 1984 National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Men's Swimming and Diving National Championships. Central's victory came in dramatic fashion. The Wildcats came out on top in the meet's final event, the 400-yard freestyle relay to capture the title Several team members competed despite suffering from the flu. CWU swimmers claimed 26 All-American awards 14 individual events and 12 in the relays. It was the first of three men’s national swimming-team titles that Central has won over a four-year period.
